Lydie of Peruwelz by Richard Burack, Sr., MD

Title: Lydie of Peruwelz

Author: Richard Burack, Sr., MD

Publisher: iUniverse

Genre: Historical Fiction

Format: Ebook
In 1839, Lydie Fougnies, 20 years old, is attractive, refined, and educated. Her father is a well-to-do businessman. She meets Felippe Van Hendryk, single child of wealthy aristocrats. They fall in love and a two-year chaste affair leads to talk of marriage. However, his class-conscious, bigoted mother severs their relationship because Lydie is not from high society. Unhappy Felippe is sent to university in Switzerland where he marries, and divorces, the wanton daughter of a wealthy Swiss banker. Lydie is angry and resentful. She is a victim of emotion and, bent on revenge, she cannot think rationally. Believing she can wreak revenge on Mme Van Hendryk by proving her worth only if she belongs to the aristocracy, she directs her attention to Count Hippolyte de Bocarmé, a farmer who lives in a dreary, desolate 16th century chateau. Unschooled and crude, his size and strength seduce her. Certain that the rustic, prodigal son of a fine family can easily be led to the altar, she mentors him in reading, writing, and manners. Never does she suspect that he’s a conscienceless psychopathic felon. He conceals his craving to know her sexually, and plans to steal her family’s fortune.
Richard Burack has a BA from the University of Wisconsin and an MD from Wake Forest University School of Medicine. He served as a Medical Officer in the U.S. Coast Guard in the Pacific Theater during the Korean War. In 1960 he was appointed to the pharmacology faculty at Harvard Medical School, and later practiced internal medicine before embarking on a career as a medical director for two U.S. non-pharmaceutical corporations. In retirement, he was a part-time physician at a charity hospital in St. Lucia and has devoted himself to writing. In 1967, Dr. Burack published The Handbook of Prescription Drugs, alerting doctors and the public to the availability of less costly generic medications. Fifty years later, the public buys the majority of its prescription drugs as “generics.” He and his wife, Mary, reside in New Hampshire. They have five children and ten grandchildren.

Royalist Sir Allen Apsley thinks his choice is clear, but when his mother embraces the Puritan cause, and his beloved sister Luce falls in love with John Hutchinson, a Roundhead soldier, his loyalties are tested. Is it family first? Is it country first? As England falls into bloody civil war, Allen must fight for king and country, while Luce embraces Parliament’s radical views and confronts the very core of the family’s beliefs. And when their influential Villiers cousins raise the stakes, Allen and Luce face a devastating challenge. Will war unite or divide them? In the dawn of rebellion, love is the final battleground.

Based on surviving memoirs, court papers and letters of Elizabeth St.John’s family, By Love Divided continues the story of Lucy St.John, The Lady of the Tower. This powerfully emotional novel tells of England’s great divide, and the heart-wrenching choices one family faces.

"I am completely blown away by Elizabeth St. John’s follow up novel, By Love Divided. The depth of her characterization, the elegance of her prose (and dialogue) and the masterful way in which she presents the realities of the English Civil War such that we’re bleeding for both sides is nothing short of brilliant. If you want a compelling, exquisitely written story to immerse you in the past, By Love Divided is a must read! I consider it one of my favourite historical reads and it's earned a place on my keeper shelf! 5 plus stars!" -Cryssa Bazos, Author of The Traitor's Knot

Chapter 14

The court was entertained with masks, stage plays, and sorts of ruder sports. Then began murder, incest, adultery, drunkenness, swearing, fornication, and all sort of ribaldry, to be no concealed but countenanced vices, because they held such conformity with the court example.
Luce Apsley
16th August 1637

Fairy-tale turrets adorned with colorful pennants capped the towers of Richmond Palace. A spritely breeze from the Thames teased the shimmering streamers, tossing them to and fro like exotic wings in flight. The castle was poised to levitate above the earth, so celestial did it appear, so ethereal in the golden August light.
Lucy calmed the fluttering in her stomach and marched forward, Luce and Babs on either side. Defying her better judgment, they attended this masque honoring the king and queen as they paused at Richmond on their journey to Whitehall. But Allen insisted, James pressured, Babs implored, and Luce was indifferent. For all four reasons, Lucy could not refuse.
Babs chattered in excitement, her words cascading. “First there is the antemasque. Then the masque, which will consist of disorder being tamed by order. And they finish with the revels, where we all join in.”
“I know, sweeting. I have been to many a masque. They have changed little since I witnessed Ben Jonson and Inigo Jones collaborating at Whitehall.” Lucy smiled at her daughter.
“You were there? You’ve attended the Banqueting House?” Babs asked reverently. “There were none nobler, and no better setting, either. You did not tell me this, Mother?”
Lucy’s stomach tightened again. “It was a long time ago, my darling. Back when your father was honored by the king, and our favor was high.”
“Perhaps he will remember you, Mother. You should arrange an introduction tonight.”
“I think not, Babs.”
“Leave court introductions to Allen, Babs,” Luce interrupted. “Mother is only here to chaperone us.”
Lucy was thankful again that she had taken her daughter into her confidence about her experience at court. There was no telling what Allen would have done with that story, for his ambitions were ignited as only a young man’s could be. Luce would keep circumspect the old rumors and was not influenced by court ambitions.
“Oh, look. Look how beautiful.” Babs’s sigh was lost in the chatter of the other guests converging on the gatehouse, which was wreathed in hundreds of roses and draped with garlands of ivy and ferns. As they passed through into the courtyard and the sun dropped behind the high towers, a thousand torches blazed, and leaping shadows flickered on the walls. Gymnasts on invisible ropes danced down the sides of the sheer walls, their toes on the stone, bodies arching out over the crowd. Mr. Coleman’s musicians played exuberantly, and Lucy and her daughters stopped, transfixed by the aerial gavotte.

About the Author

Elizabeth St.John was brought up in England and lives in California. To inform her writing, she has tracked down family papers and residences from Nottingham Castle, Lydiard Park, and Castle Fonmon to the Tower of London. Although the family sold a few castles and country homes along the way (it's hard to keep a good castle going these days), Elizabeth's family still occupy them - in the form of portraits, memoirs, and gardens that carry their imprint. And the occasional ghost. But that's a different story...

By Love Divided, Elizabeth's sequel to The Lady of the Tower, follows the fortunes of the St.John family during the English Civil War, and is out now.

Bringer of Chaos: Forged in Fire The Sempervian Saga (Book 2) by Kayelle Allen

Bringer of Chaos: Forged in Fire
The Sempervian Saga (Book 2)
by Kayelle Allen

BLURB:
Humans created the Ultras, a genetically enhanced race, to defend mankind. Instead, Ultras became their greatest threat. With the help of traitors, humans captured half a million of the immortal warriors.

Exiled to an alien world with no tech, no tools, and no resources, their leader, Pietas, must protect his people, find food and shelter and unite them. But before he can, he must regain command from a ruthless adversary he's fought for centuries--his brutal, merciless father.

Ultras are immortal, and no matter how they die, they come back. Reviving after death isn't all it's cracked up to be. Some wounds heal instantly and a few take time, but battered and broken trust? Immortals may heal, but a wound of the heart lasts forever.

Excerpt:
Bringer of Chaos: Forged in Fire is military science fiction with romantic elements. This excerpt is the foreword, which was "written" by Pietas, the hero.

You're human. Lies are your nature.
Truth is mine. Honoring my word means more to me than life.
Humans are craven, contemptible and reprehensible supplanters of power. What you need is the truth.
Traitors among my kind lied to you. They concealed themselves among you and claimed we were myth. They fed you false hope you were safe. They lulled you into complacent ignorance. The deceivers manipulated, confused, and desensitized you.
You chose to believe the lies.
You've heard tales of visitors from outer space. Stories of aliens who walk among you. You called them urban legends, myths, tall tales for the campfire, untrue.
You refused to believe the truth.
This book relates my tale but is not from my point of view. Call it Science Fiction, but it happened. I exist. My dimension is not yours, so you have not been aware of me--until now--but I know everything about you.
To honor a worthy human friend, I considered sparing humanity. I have since seen the folly of blanket exemption. Not all of you deserve to die, but there are requirements for being protected. Will I choose you?
Perhaps. I offer no guarantee. Your fate is a bequest no one can usurp.
Believe me.
Read this, if you dare to know the truth.
~ Pietas

Bringer of Chaos: The Origin of Pietas
The Sempervian Saga (Book 1)

Why should Pietas end the war with humans?
His people are winning, yet they insist on peace talks. The Ultra people want to grant humans a seat on the Council. Pietas ap Lorectic, Chancellor of the High Council, War Leader and First Conqueror, disagrees. What's best for mortals is oppression, control, and if necessary, elimination.
Pietas seethes with rage at the idea of human equality. Humans might have created Ultras, but the creation has far surpassed the creator. Humans die. Ultras are reborn, no matter how grievous the injury. They have no equals.
His people permit him no choice. He must attend these insipid peace talks on Enderium Six and what's worse, be polite. To humans.
When a human special ops warrior is killed in battle, he's resurrected in a secret process and inducted into the Ghost Corps. He's given enough strength to perma-kill immortal Ultras. Ghosts are the most hated and feared of warriors.
When the ghost entraps and captures Pietas at the peace talks, the two begin a long journey toward Sempervia, an isolated and forgotten world. Once there, Pietas is marooned and the ghost abandoned alongside him. The two must either fight to perma-death, or join forces to survive.

As Pietas comes to trust the human, an unlikely and awkward friendship begins. Until he discovers how ghosts are resurrected...

Constitutional Renaissance by Richard Monts

Title: Constitutional Renaissance

Author: Richard Monts

Publisher: XLibrisUS

Genre: Political Science/Government

Format: Ebook
Have you had enough? When will the United States government stop growing? All constitutionally enumerated activities should have been in place long ago. There should be no more expansion in scope, yet there is. What we have now is an overbearing out-of-control central government—expanding far beyond constitutional limits—imposing on member states’ sovereignty. The result is a reduction in competition among states, a stifling business environment, and citizens and businesses suffering under complex taxation and regulations. On top of that, a litigious environment depresses economic activity further. There is an alternative! This book presents one that is very business friendly, establishes competition among the states, and provides a positive environment for the individual to strive for their potential while honoring the genius of the Constitution.
Mr. Monts has been concerned about continued expansion of the United States government since the Kennedy administration. He deferred to others, constitutional and legal experts galore, for the correct interpretation of the Constitution. He assumed they were right. During the Affordable Care Act discussions, he had heard enough. He determined to answer two questions to his own satisfaction. First, what is the role of the United States government? Second, what is the best environment for the individual to realize their own potential? After reading the Constitution and other contemporary writings, using his own common sense, putting intellectual integrity and honesty before ideology, ignoring case law, using correct meanings of critical words, he had his answers. The results are in this book.

Fix Your Diet, Fix Your Diabetes by Dr. Tony Hampton Blog Tour

Title:
FIX YOUR DIET FIX YOUR DIABETES
Author: Tony Hampton, MD
Publisher: Windy City Publishers
Pages: 168
Genre: Self-Help

Want to fix your diabetes?  In this book, I share with
my diabetic and borderline diabetic readers that they have the power to reverse
or prevent diabetes simply by changing their diets.  It starts with how
you think.  By removing old beliefs to new ones that better serve you, the
path to recovery from diabetes can be that simple.  Once I provide the
rationale for changing old beliefs to more productive ones, I then share with
you ways to stay motivated as you journey to a new way of eating.  You are
then given a deeper understanding of why so many people have diabetes.
This knowledge will allow you to remove thoughts you may have had where
you blamed yourself for having diabetes.  You are then given tips on how
to maintain the motivation needed to make a successful transition to a diabetic
friendly diet.  Additional knowledge is given about the many complications
which could occur when this condition is not well controlled.  Empowered
with the understanding of why diabetes occurs and its many complications, you
will be given a case for changing how diabetes is treated.  This is done
by changing the focus of diabetes management away from the symptoms (elevated
glucose), which is how we currently manage this condition, to treating the
cause of the disease (insulin resistance).  You are then given the
rationale for increasing healthy fats in your diets while reducing starchy
carbohydrates and processed foods.  Once this is explained, examples of
foods that should be considered for smoothies, snacks, and dinner are given so
you will know how to choose foods which are best.   Finally, tips on how
to avoid being fooled by marketing labels and claims of so-called healthy foods
provide the framework by which great dietary choices can be made.  This
new approach to reversing diabetes with diet will reverse diabetes in nearly
anyone willing to make these simply lifestyle changes.

INSULIN RESISTANCE AND HOW TO REVERSE IT

Now that you understand that Type 2 diabetes is about
insulin resistance, it’s time to rethink how you are approaching your treatment
for this condition. Most doctors and their patients focus on reducing the blood
glucose values and if they’re successful they feel they’re controlling
diabetes. But I asked myself if we were fixing the core problem or simply
treating the symptoms. After reflecting on the question, I realized the core
problem may not be elevated blood glucose levels after all. High glucose values
are simply a symptom of diabetes. So where should the focus be?

The answer is insulin resistance. By focusing on this, you
could achieve much better results, since this is essential to fixing your
diabetes. Let’s use an analogy to help think about this concept in a different
way. If I see a patient who presents with a painful throat, red and swollen
tonsils, swollen lymph nodes in the neck, and a fever, I know I likely have a
patient who needs to be treated for strep throat. In order to solve his
problem, I will need to give him an antibiotic to fight the bacteria that is
causing his symptoms. If I gave this patient Tylenol, I would only be treating
his symptoms, and would likely end up with a patient who feels better but isn’t
really cured.

This is what we are doing with our diabetes treatment. This
is also likely the reason we consider this a progressively worsening disease.
By shifting your focus, you will find a path to the solution you’ve been
searching for. Why focus on insulin resistance? Because when insulin levels are
high due to resistance, lipolysis (fat breakdown) is inhibited, sensitive
arteries throughout the body are exposed to damaging higher levels of glucose,
muscle protein synthesis is reduced, and glycogen-filled cells are converted to
fat for storage.
